Story

The story

When her father is rushed to the emergency room after a car accident, Evalyn Levine begs her husband Jeffrey Hood to come, but he dismisses her to celebrate Melinda Stuart's birthday. By the time she reaches the hospital, her father is gone. After years of Jeffrey's affairs and cruelty, she returns home to pack and tells him she wants a divorce.

Jeffrey refuses to believe her father has died, accusing her of lying for money and of trapping him in a marriage he never wanted. He sides with Melinda, has his bodyguards pin Evalyn down, and demands she apologize. She slaps him and Melinda instead, declaring the true culprit behind her father's accident is Jeffrey himself.

As she walks out with her suitcase, Jeffrey cuts off the funds meant to save her father's company, still certain she will crawl back. This time, Evalyn no longer cares.

Opening excerpt

I nodded, holding back tears, but deep down, I knew Jeffrey harbored resentment toward me. He blamed me for his shattered relationship, my inherited wealth, and for coming between him and his first love.

Nothing could deter him from pursuing her, not even me.

"Evalyn, today is Melinda's birthday. Can you just be reasonable for once?"
