Story

The story

At eighteen, Eleanor watched Vaughn Vance fumble with the torn blouse of Mia Foster, a scholarship student. Years later, family arrangements bound Eleanor and Vaughn in marriage, yet New York society knew he kept Mia's portrait locked in his study. Three years in, Eleanor asks for a divorce; Vaughn signs in silence, then tells her to ask if she ever needs anything.

When Vaughn is hurt in a brawl and Mia reappears, Eleanor sees a tenderness in him she has never known. He shields Mia, calls her delicate, and rushes to her side at a scream, while warning Eleanor that the night's events had better not involve her.

Once childhood companions, now strangers bound by duty, Eleanor and Vaughn face a marriage hollowed by an old obsession. The divorce she once whispered becomes a roar.

At twenty-six, I married Vaughn Vance in a match arranged by our families. But everyone in New York’s elite society knew he kept a portrait of that same girl locked away in his study.
