"You're lying! Just now you said the child was mine, and now you're saying it's Chloe's? Can you prove it? You want to shove a child into our family without any evidence? Officer, I suspect this man is involved in child trafficking!"
With that, I pushed the baby straight back into his arms, then turned and crossed my arms, looking like it had nothing to do with me.
My mom, standing nearby, gasped in alarm: "Aria! What are you doing?!"
"Dad, Mom, don't be so naive. There are so many scammers out there, specializing in these kinds of tricks!"
Aunt Carol also stepped forward: "Old Mr. and Mrs. Evans, you can't just talk nonsense. The doctor clearly said the child was Aria's at first, and now he's saying it's Chloe's. Isn't that contradictory?"
"Exactly! Who can guarantee this child isn't just some random kid he picked up from somewhere?"
The doctor panicked, suddenly standing up: "I, Dr. Miller, have been practicing medicine for years, and I've never lied! What would I gain from deceiving you?"
"Just last night, your sister Chloe herself came to my clinic, begging me to deliver her baby!"
"She even left her cell phone with me as collateral!"
Saying that, he pulled a phone from his bag. I focused my eyes – it really was Chloe's.
My parents were both stunned. The evidence was right in front of them; the child was indeed Chloe's, no mistake about it.
The surrounding neighbors erupted in chatter: "Oh my, Chloe gave birth at such a young age? Whose is it?"
"Who knows, she's always appearing and disappearing mysteriously, wearing baggy clothes. Who would've thought she was already pregnant!"
"Probably got tangled up with some shady guy, and this is the fallout!"
"You all shut up! My daughter is pure and innocent!" My mom, furious this time, yelled at the crowd, "Whoever spreads rumors again, I'm not done with them!"
Dr. Miller sneered: "Hmph, Chloe herself instructed me. After giving birth, she wanted me to deliver the baby to your house, for her sister to raise. Officer, I even have a handwritten note from her here!"
He pulled out another letter, revealing it to everyone.
But in my previous life, there was no such letter.
Back then, when Chloe returned and cursed me, Dr. Miller had even added fuel to the fire, insisting I'd stolen her child, driving me to desperation until I died an unjust death.
This man was utterly wicked!
Dr. Miller grunted: "I knew I shouldn't have gotten involved in this mess. Cursed my luck!"
The police officer looked at the situation, sighing: "This is a family dispute; it's hard for us to intervene too much."
I grabbed the officer's arm: "Officer, this isn't just a family matter! Can you really conclude that my sister gave birth and then ran off, just based on a cell phone and a letter?"
"What if she's been dead in your clinic all this time? And you're just trying to brush it off?"
The officer listened, thought it made sense, and immediately took Dr. Miller with him, heading straight to the clinic for investigation.
My parents also followed. I took the opportunity to quickly pack my luggage.
I was never staying in this house again.
Just as I stepped out, a neighbor saw me: "Aria, where are you going?"
"I'm moving out. I can't stay here. What if they really dump that kid on my parents, and then I'd end up raising him anyway?"
"Why should I take the fall for a child Chloe made herself? I'm not even married yet. If my future partner's family finds out, they'll think I'm promiscuous. My reputation would be ruined beyond repair!"
Everyone nodded in agreement: "That makes sense! Aria, think of yourself, hurry and go!"
"Oh, Chloe, she's too bold. She gave birth, and now she's gone!"
"Maybe that doctor did something shady, and she's been gone for a while!"
"It can't be that bad..."
I couldn't be bothered to listen to their gossip. I grabbed my bag and left.
By the time my parents returned home, I was already settled in my company's dorm.
Not long after, my mom's call came through.
I answered the phone, and her anxious voice came from the other end: "Aria! Where did you run off to?!"
In the background, a baby was wailing.
I calmly said: "I've moved out."
"How could you leave? What about this child if you're gone?!"
