Story

The story

For eighteen years, Alex lived as the Ashford family's heir. Then the real son, Ethan Miller, returned at their shared eighteenth birthday party, and the Ashfords welcomed him with a pride Alex had never known. Humiliated before the guests, Alex watched his place in the family dissolve.

When a drunk man harasses Alex at a bar, Ethan steps in, taking broken glass to his own arm and pulling Alex from danger. Ethan claims Mrs. Ashford sent him to bring Alex home, yet he kneels to bandage Alex's scraped knee with a gentleness that makes no sense from the boy whose life Alex stole. Alex cannot decide whether Ethan is a threat, a rival, or something stranger.

Then a call from City General Hospital arrives: the grandmother who raised Alex until age eight is dead, and Alex begs the Ashfords to let him pay his respects.
