The Placeholder Husband

Ethan's wife Claire is the picture of emotional stability: she never checks his phone, never asks where he has been, and never questions him. Friends call him lucky, but the house stays dark and silent, and Claire's calm feels less like trust than distance. When he comes home late, she simply tells him to sleep and retreats to their daughter Maya's room.

Their marriage began as a near-stranger arrangement, and after five years Ethan finally understands that Claire does not love him. Then he finds an old phone in the study, its contacts holding only one name, and an anonymous blog whose posts reveal a heart that belongs to someone else.

He hands her divorce papers, and her calm shatters into fury. He only looks at the empty space on her ring finger.
