Story

The story

After the school's most popular girl rejects him, resident bad boy Ace throws a tantrum in class, scattering cash across the floor. Hungry and dizzy, Lily joins the scramble for the bills — and a translucent screen flickers to life, mocking her as an extra who doesn't know her place. When Alice appears at the door, Ace shoves the rest of the money into Lily's hands and declares his allowance is hers from now on.

Lily has been unwanted since her father died and her mother remarried; her frail grandmother, whose eyesight is failing, can barely support them. The windfall covers medicine, shoes and rice, and Ace keeps his word, treating her to a feast and later pressing his monthly allowance on her. Yet the screens insist he is only the devoted second male lead, acting out of wounded pride, and that a cannon fodder girl like Lily will never matter to him.

All Lily wants is a full stomach — and perhaps a life of her own.

A lot of kids scrambled to pick it up. My vision was blurry from hunger, so I joined in.

But the moment I snatched a crisp bill from the floor, a translucent screen flickered into existence before my eyes.
