Lory and Frayne Gallacher grew up in the same courtyard, where the brilliant, sharp-tongued boy tutored her and everyone teased that they looked like a married couple. Then Bettina Wilks arrived, all rebellion and confidence, and Frayne abandoned his studies, his future and Lory for the thrill she offered.

When Bettina taunts Lory over whether she can ride on the back of Frayne's motorcycle, Lory agrees to the race, desperate to make him change. On the mountain course a freight truck bursts from the last tunnel; Frayne swerves, Lory is thrown and the motorcycle crashes down on her leg. He helps Bettina up instead, and the two walk away hand in hand, leaving Lory behind.

In her hospital bed Lory finally lets the old love die, and asks her parents to move away. Seven years later, at a prestigious conference, Frayne rushes to her and grips her arm, asking if they can start all over again.
