The story
Three days before her wedding, Clara Hayes is struck by a car and left paralyzed from the waist down. Her fiancé, Lucas Stone, has the driver jailed, then sits at her hospital bedside and quietly arranges a surgery that will leave her unable to bear children — so that she will raise the child he shares with Lily as her own.
Still drifting in and out of consciousness, Clara hears everything: the plan, the payoff, the child named Rose, the wedding that was never meant for her. When she wakes, Lucas weeps over a report claiming she was born without a uterus, and she says nothing.
She asks her best friend to find a hospital abroad, cancels her identification documents, and agrees to let someone stand in for her at the wedding. Then she asks Lucas to take her to the orphanage, where a little girl runs up and calls him Daddy.

Three days before the wedding, I was hit by a car, and my spine was fractured. Lucas, my fiancé, put the driver behind bars. I lay in the hospital bed, refusing to wake, devastated by the news of my paralysis. In a haze, I overheard Lucas’s conversation with the doctor.
“Mr. Stone, it’s still not too late for the surgery. A few more days, and Ms. Hayes will truly be paralyzed for life! You just want Lily to be your bride; why take on half a life’s burden?”
