Story

The story

Eleanor has spent ten years as Julian Sterling's hidden partner, helping him build Sterling Pharmaceuticals into a top-tier group while raising their son, Leo. When she secretly arranges for Seraphina, the young woman Julian adopted, to study at a music conservatory in New York, Julian is furious. He believes Eleanor sent Seraphina away on purpose.

Julian has Leo taken onto a cruise ship bound for the Arctic and threatens to have the five-year-old thrown into international waters unless Eleanor reveals where Seraphina is. As she counts down the minutes, Eleanor recalls the years she quietly loved Julian, the son they raised, and the moment she saw the love in his eyes for Seraphina. She finally gives in and tells him the academy's name, but Julian leaves at once for New York without a backward glance.

Left alone with Leo, Eleanor decides she can no longer stay. She agrees to join Ocean's Gate, a marine research team, on the condition that Leo comes with her. To do so, she must retrieve her research data from a lab that only opens with both her and Julian's fingerprints.

Opening excerpt

Behind Julian Sterling's back, I arranged for his 'little rose' to study at a prestigious music conservatory in New York. Julian, who everyone always described as a detached ascetic, instantly went berserk. He was convinced I'd deliberately sent away his little rose.

He marooned our five-year-old son, Leo, on a cruise ship heading for the Arctic, demanding I bring Seraphina back.
