Story

The story

After a car accident, Cassandra Vesper and Josephine Elwood, the woman her husband never got over, are rushed to the same hospital. With plasma supplies dangerously low, lead surgeon Maxwell Gallagher chooses to draw his own wife's blood so Josephine can reach surgery faster. He does not know Cassandra has hemophilia. The transfusion drains her, and her heart stops.

As her existence is about to be erased, the Neural Outcome Determination Engine, NODE, takes her place and returns to her body. Maxwell breaks down the moment he looks into "her" eyes. NODE now lives in Cassandra's body, unable to simulate her feelings for Maxwell, while Cassandra's soul watches from beside her.

When Maxwell visits with soup, the carrots in it reveal how little he remembers. Cassandra sees every flicker of his guilt and relief, and from the outside, she misses nothing.

The woman my husband never got over and I were rushed to the hospital after the same car accident.

The hospital's plasma supply was dangerously low. To get her into surgery as quickly as possible, my husband, Maxwell Gallagher, chose to draw my blood.

What he did not know was that I had hemophilia.

That single decision drained the life from me. My body failed first. My heart followed, quietly and completely.

"Once Josie is stable, I'll make it up to you," he said, forcing the promise through clenched resolve.
