Story

The story

Stella is fifteen, and at home she is invisible. Her mother gave her robot-shaped inhaler to Leo, the five-year-old son of her stepfather Richard, because the boy cried for it. When Stella reaches for her emergency spray, her mother throws it away and Richard kicks it under the sofa, calling her dramatic. They sit down to a dinner of everything Leo loves while Stella lies on the cold tiles, her airway closing, her nails turning purple.

No one comes. Leo pokes her cheek and steps on her hair; Richard drags her up by the collar and lets her drop. The family portrait on the TV stand shows Richard, her mother and Leo smiling, without her. Once her mother panicked and called her Starry, but that was before Richard and Leo existed.

As the sun sets on the summer evening, Stella lies on the floor, still fighting for a single breath, and no one in the house is listening.

Opening excerpt

My stepfather’s son saw the robot-shaped inhaler I used to save my life during asthma attacks. He cried and demanded to have it.

My stepfather glanced at my mother. Without hesitation, she turned around and snatched the robot from my hands.

"Mom—"

Before I could finish, the air in my throat was cut off.

The boy pushed me to the ground. I desperately clawed at my pocket, trying to reach my emergency spray.

"Faking it again," my stepfather sneered. "Girls are always so dramatic."
