Story

The story

For seven years, Elara has loved Eric across a long distance, sending him half her salary each month while he claims to be a struggling employee in Seaview City. When she quits her job and travels to him for a surprise proposal, the receptionists at his office whisper about a side piece and a Mrs. Hillman. A woman in Chanel arrives, and the voice on her phone is Eric's.

Clara Vance introduces herself as Eric's wife, the treasured daughter of the Vance family, and speaks of prenatal check-ups and a devoted husband. Eric greets Elara as a mere university acquaintance and has her escorted away, while employees film her and jeer. A crumpled prenatal report in her bag names Eric Hillman as the father.

Locked inside his villa, Elara finds a wedding photo dated her own birthday, Clara's lace nightgown beside Eric's shirts, and an almost-empty box of condoms. His message orders her to behave and stay silent.

Opening excerpt

At the desk, a sharp-eyed receptionist eyed me oddly when I asked for Eric. “He’s in a meeting. Wait.”

I frowned—Eric hadn’t mentioned a promotion. Last week he’d moaned about work stress, saying promotion was distant. Turning, I overheard: “Is that his side piece?” “Brave, showing up here.” “Mrs. Hillman will go mad if she finds out.”
