Story
The story
On the night before the Bar Exam, Toby, the golden boy of the pre-law suite, disables every alarm in the building, calling it a gift of natural rest. The others praise him, mocking Daniel for treating the test like life or death. Daniel has lived this night before: he once woke the whole floor, and Toby, reprimanded, fled to the roof and died in the cold. Later, at their farewell dinner, Rachel and the others locked Daniel on a balcony and let him freeze, blaming him for Toby's death. Now he has returned to that same night, and this time he says nothing. He switches off his own last alarm, drops his phone into Toby's bin, and packs his exam bag in silence. The doors close at 8:30, and no candidate is admitted more than fifteen minutes late. Rachel corners him, certain he is hiding a secret alarm, and the room turns on him. This time, Daniel will not be anyone's alarm clock.

"I just wanted everyone to wake up naturally," Toby murmured, his voice trembling with gentle innocence. "Toby doesn't want anyone starting the most important day of their lives with an elevated heart rate. Truly capable people don't need a buzzer to save them."
