Story

The story

For ten years, Elena has served the vampire prince Damon as his exclusive blood servant, ever since he saved her from a rogue vampire in a dark alley. On the night she turns eighteen, he finally takes her to his bed, and she believes he is at last ready to grant her the Embrace and make her his forever.

Afterward, Damon speaks in Latin with Marcus, the lesser vampire he turned, about the Blood Moon Ceremony and about Serena, the noble vampire he intends to marry. He calls Elena a little green, good only for practice, and says he will keep her around until she is gone. Damon does not know that Elena secretly learned Latin to feel worthy of him, and she understands every word.

Saying nothing, Elena changes her college plans and turns toward a life of her own, no longer wanting immortality but to be human again.
