Story
The story
Leah has always been able to see the red threads of fate, and for eight years a single crimson line has bound her to Jack, her high school sweetheart. When a birthday hike in the northern ridges goes wrong, Jack vanishes, a storm triggers a mudslide, and Leah loses both her unborn baby and her best friend Beth, who died pulling her to safety.
At her hospital bedside, Jack finally appears, but the thread on his chest has split in two. Then Leah follows him to the Northside university district and watches him embrace Sadie, the girl she has sponsored for six years and raised like a younger sister. Sadie's social media reveals the truth: Jack abandoned the hike to keep their Snapstreak alive.
As her own thread fades and Jack's turns a deep garnet, Leah must face how completely the two people she loved have betrayed her.
Opening excerpt
I have always been able to see the red strings.
They are thin, glowing threads of fate, anchoring one soul to another. When two people share a deep, intimate bond, a line appears between them.
Jack and I were high school sweethearts. For eight years, a single, vibrant crimson thread ran from my chest straight to his, steady and unbroken.
For his twenty-eighth birthday, we planned a weekend trip with our closest friends to hike the rugged backcountry of the northern ridges.
