Story

The story

Nancy has always felt like an outsider in her husband Daniel's wealthy world. An orphan raised on his family's charity, she depends on pills for her weak heart and lives in quiet fear of being discarded. Then Morgan returns: a cardiac specialist, Daniel's childhood friend, and the woman from a terrifying vision Nancy had while unconscious—a vision in which Daniel signed away her heart.

As Morgan glides back into Daniel's circle, his mother and oldest friends make it clear that Morgan, not Nancy, was always the intended match. Nancy watches the two of them share private texts and whispered conversations, and her jealousy hardens into dread.

At a party, Nancy overhears Morgan ask Daniel how long he can keep the truth from her. His answer—that he would rather she hate him than face the alternative—leaves her blood cold.

The blurry shadows of the room slowly sharpened. Daniel’s face was inches from mine, his expression unreadable, while the woman beside him—the one with the sharp, bobbed hair—reached out toward me.
