Ex-Wife, Remarriage Is Impossible

At the Powell family's anniversary banquet, Liam stands before the guests and demands a divorce, insisting his wife Ava leave with nothing. She adopted an Alaskan Malamute named Bailey, feeding the dog the milk meant for their hungry daughter Zoe, and Liam has endured it until now. He declares that men shouldn't raise cats and women shouldn't raise dogs, and that she chose a male dog of all things.

Ava protests that she only gave Bailey the milk because a cold made her fear passing it to the baby. Her foster brother Samuel spits at Liam and calls him ungrateful, while her father Ronald reminds him the Powells paid for his education and welcomed an orphan into their family. Guests urge forgiveness, but Liam flings Ava's hand away and refuses to back down.

When Samuel lunges with a broken bottle, Liam disarms him, and Ava hurls a chili sauce bottle that cuts Liam's cheek. Bleeding, he is judged the villain. He walks out into the night, where a black van waits.
