A World Cup Without You

The night before the World Cup, Reid Callister posts a photo of himself in a Portugal jersey beside another woman, declaring he is done with Argentina. His wife Brynn sits alone in the dark living room, staring at the post, while he comes home cheerful and dismissive, insisting it was only for fun and that she never understood football anyway.

Four years earlier, when Argentina won the championship, Reid had wept in Brynn's arms until dawn and slipped a ring onto her finger. Now she has learned that his proposal was only a tantrum after losing Nola Carver, his first love, who has just returned. Nola sends her a photo of Reid choosing a Portugal jersey, asking her to give up a seat that was never hers.

At the sports bar, Brynn overhears Reid and his friends laughing about the proposal, about how easy she is to manage. Her flight leaves in two nights, an hour before kickoff.
