Story

The story

At the height of her career, Tess is slapped in public by her husband, Eric, who accuses her of failing Grace out of jealousy. When she falls, clutching her stomach, he sneers that she is a useless woman who cannot get pregnant. By the time bystanders get her to the hospital, her baby is lost. After the surgery, Tess demands a divorce, but Eric dismisses her as manipulative and leaves to take Grace on a getaway.

Back in the home she built, Tess receives photos from Grace in the Maldives, kissing Eric in the very place Tess once dreamed of for their honeymoon. Grace claims the messages were meant for her notes, yet the cruelty is deliberate. Tess remembers how Eric once defended her, then pressured her into fertility pills, and how he now rushes to Grace while ignoring her burns and pain.

Sitting alone beneath their wedding photo, Tess reaches for a knife, her heart churning with grief and betrayal.

Opening excerpt

At the peak of my career, my husband slapped me in public.

With a look of disgust, he said, “Tess, you’re pathetic. You made Grace fail the class because you’re jealous. Don’t you know she’s applying for a scholarship?”

Caught off guard, I stumbled and fell to the ground, clutching my stomach as pain surged through me.
