Story
The story
Eva Carter wakes during her ectopic pregnancy surgery to find her husband Ethan Hayes, the lead surgeon, calmly suturing her. He tells her there was never an ectopic pregnancy and no infertility: four years ago he performed a tubal ligation on her, and this time he deliberately removed their healthy baby. He explains that his brother Nathan died in a boat accident, and he gave Nathan's widow Freya a child instead.
Recovering in her hospital bed, Eva hears moans from the next bed and finds Freya and Ethan together, with Freya wearing a tattoo matching Ethan's. Ethan tells her they already have a three-year-old child and offers her a divorce, which Eva refuses, vowing they will remain shameful adulterers. He then reveals that Freya, not Eva, consummated their marriage on their wedding night, making Eva the third party.
Eva remembers years of enduring contempt for her childlessness and countless treatments, all while Ethan's tenderness always went to Freya. When Freya brings her soup, Eva knocks it away and is slapped by Ethan, who calls Freya her best friend.
Opening excerpt
I woke up during my ectopic pregnancy surgery.
My eyes met My husband Ethan's.
As the lead surgeon, he showed no surprise whatsoever.
Instead, he spoke in an utterly calm tone: "Actually, you don't have infertility issues. Four years ago, I performed a tubal ligation on you.
This time, you didn't have an ectopic pregnancy either. The baby was perfectly healthy, but I've already removed it."
A chill ran through my entire body.
My eyes turned bloodshot.
"Why?"
His gaze remained unruffled: "My brother Nathan died in that boat accident.
