Story

The story

Ava earns as much as her husband, yet her mother-in-law keeps score in public. When her sister-in-law sends a thousand dollars, the older woman posts it online with a caption implying only a biological daughter remembers her mother, and the neighborhood comments pile on Ava's supposed unfiliality. Ava answers by transferring five thousand dollars to her own mother and sharing the screenshot, then asks relatives and colleagues to spread it.

At home the mother-in-law rages about squandered money, and Ava points out whose earnings paid for it. Her husband Jeremy, a technical manager, first urges peace, then secretly sends ten thousand dollars from Ava's phone with an apology in her name, later transferring twenty thousand back to her. His sister Penny then messages Ava, demanding she kneel in apology and dragging Ava's younger sister into the fight.

Ava has tolerated the nagging and the monthly allowance, the gold bracelets and red envelopes. Now the question is whether she will keep swallowing the insult for the sake of her son and a quiet house.

Opening excerpt

The caption was sarcastic. [Only biological daughters would think of their old mother like me.]

I liked her post and commented. [Mom's right.]

Then I immediately shared a screenshot of the 5,000 dollars I had just transferred to my own mom.

The caption counterattacked. [Daughters should definitely show filial piety to their mothers with the money they earn.]

On the way to pick up the child.

Another mom walking with me looked at her phone and exclaimed, "Ava, look at your mother-in-law's new post!"
