Story
The story
Chloe Carter has spent years supporting her fiancé Ethan's business, putting her Ivy League education on hold while he disappears on long "business trips." At home, he claims he is severely allergic to her bodily fluids, flinching from her touch and refusing comfort even when she burns with fever. Meanwhile, her best friend Lily floods their group chat with luxury gifts and boasts about her passionate lover.
The night before the wedding, Lily posts a photo of a bare chest bearing a scar Chloe knows by heart. Racing to Ethan's bachelor party, Chloe finds him wrapped around Lily, and when she confronts them, Ethan strikes her down with a crystal ashtray. She wakes in a hospital bed and cancels the wedding, but Ethan storms in, demanding she apologize to Lily and dangling her mother's heart surgery as leverage.
Opening excerpt
One day she was trying a new position in bed, the next she was showing off a million-dollar designer bag, and the day after that, she was wearing priceless diamond jewelry.
Meanwhile, my fiancé, Ethan, treated me like the plague.
He claimed he was severely allergic to my bodily fluids, so we had almost zero intimacy.
Even if I accidentally brushed his hand, he would flinch and pull away immediately.
Once, in the middle of the night, I had a burning fever of 102°F.
