Story

The story

During the holidays, a husband cooks a feast of his wife Willow Steele's favorite dishes, only for his mother-in-law to produce a paternity test report. She announces with a smile that his daughter Naomi Johnson's birth father is Willow's childhood sweetheart, Luther Lloyd. The family laughs, saying Naomi looks just like Luther, and Willow's father pats Luther on the shoulder like family. Willow, laughing, tells Naomi to call Luther "daddy." Naomi rushes into Luther's arms. The husband asks for a divorce; Willow calls it a joke and says he will beg to return.

He plans to leave, but returns home for his ID and passport. He finds a mess, levonorgestrel pills and wine-red lingerie by the bedroom door, and hickeys on Willow's neck. Luther rests in their bed. Naomi shoves him, saying she hates him and wants Luther as her daddy. Willow tells him to clean up and buy hangover medicine for Luther. He books a flight, contacts a lawyer, and pours away the soup she made, which contains eggs he is allergic to.

Six years of one-sided effort come to an end as he decides to leave for good.

Opening excerpt

During the holidays, I've worked my ass off just to whip up a feast filled with my wife, Willow Steele's favorite dishes.

But soon, my mother-in-law pulls out a paternity test report and announces with a smile that the birth father of my daughter, Naomi Johnson, is actually Willow's childhood sweetheart, Luther Lloyd.

Everyone bursts into laughter before saying teasingly that "no wonder Naomi looks so much like Luther".

Willow's father even pats Luther on the shoulder while looking at him as though the latter were a part of the family.
