Story

The story

Adriano drops his car at a service center run by his cousin, Chad Graham, and asks the staff to put the work on Chad's tab. The manager, Beryl Merritt, refuses and slaps down a bill for $280,000 in absurd charges. When Adriano calls Chad, Beryl takes the phone and dismisses him as a freeloading relative.

Chad arrives and admits Beryl is his girlfriend and future fiancée, asking to cover the tab. Adriano refuses, then agrees to pay but demands a full breakdown of every charge. Beryl recites the ridiculous fees with growing arrogance, humiliating him before his business partners.

After sending his guests off with a promise of dinner at Summit Peak, Adriano finds Beryl blocking his exit with security guards, demanding payment as a crowd watches. He calls for $500,000 in cash, but when Beryl tries to seize it, he insists on a receipt first, leaving Chad panicked.

Opening excerpt

The staff member nodded and started to process it, but then the female manager stepped in.

"We don't do tabs here. You've got to pay up now," she said, slapping the bill down right in front of me.

Premium Diagnostic Scan: $80,000

Exhaust System Sound Enhancement: $100,000

Engine Harmony Calibration: $100,000

Total: $280,000.

I laughed at the absurdity. Since when did my cousin start running a rip-off operation?
