Story

The story

At a high school reunion, Carol Vance watches her ex-husband Caleb Howard arrive as the city's celebrated young entrepreneur. When a drunken former classmate urges him to give Carol another chance, Caleb raises his left hand and says he is married. Only Carol knows the truth: they divorced three years ago, and he is still wearing the ring.

Their marriage began without a proposal or ceremony, only a quiet trip to City Hall after his mother fell ill. Carol set aside her own career to support his struggling company, but as his business grew, so did the distance between them, widened by his brilliant colleague Vivian Chen and a world Carol could not enter.

Now, face to face with the man who once promised her a real wedding, Carol must confront the question of why he never took off that ring.

Opening excerpt

Years after graduation, Caleb Howard was a name everyone knew.

At our high school reunion, someone decided to play matchmaker, nudging him towards me.

"Caleb, my man! Remember the little shadow who used to follow you around everywhere?" he slurred, reeking of whiskey. "You're single, she's single... why not give it another shot?"

Caleb slowly raised his left hand, a humorless smile on his lips. "I'm married."

The table erupted in shocked whispers.
