Because You Loved Her Image, You Missed My Truth

Carolyn bears an uncanny resemblance to Kai Lockwood's lost love, and that is how she became his wife. For seven years he spoiled her endlessly, gave her whatever she wanted, and named their son Scott his sole heir. She believed he had finally let go of the old flame and fallen in love with her, until she learned he kept a mistress outside, Florence, who resembles his first love even more.

When Florence disappears, Kai is certain Carolyn is to blame. He presses Scott's small hand over a pool of acid and demands to know where Florence is, insisting he will not have just one son. The boy's arm plunges into the acid, and the doctor says he will never play the piano again. Kai brings Florence home to live with them, and when she stages a fall, he slaps Scott and locks Carolyn in the basement.

Carolyn digs out the prenuptial agreement Kai once signed, promising to walk away with nothing if he ever cheated, and calls her lawyer. She begins burning every memento of their marriage, then soaks the rose garden he built for her in gasoline and strikes a match.
