Story

The story

Tiana Lowes has bought scratch-off tickets at Lucky Mart on Spring Street for years, always scratching first and paying later on an unspoken understanding with the shop attendant, Chloe Byrne. Then one ticket reveals a million-dollar prize, and Chloe snatches it from her hand, accusing Tiana of never paying and calling her a thief.

Tiana warns that one call could revoke the shop's license, but Chloe dismisses her, boasting the shop has survived a dozen complaints. When Tiana takes a megaphone to the street, a crowd gathers and the police arrive. Chloe files a false complaint first, then demands a payment receipt Tiana never had. The security footage could settle it, yet Chloe stalls, and the owner, Felix Perkins, arrives claiming he trusts Tiana's word.

His goodwill proves false: he and Chloe are in cahoots, and he offers Tiana three hundred thousand dollars of the prize while keeping five hundred thousand for himself. The officers say they cannot arrest him, leaving Tiana to accept the split or take the dispute to court.

One day, the scratch-off ticket I took revealed a million-dollar prize.

“You never paid for this scratch-off ticket! Taking it without asking makes you a thief!
