The Better Person

At dinner, a husband asks his wife what she would do if he met someone better. She answers calmly that he should be with her, and they can divorce. He does not know she has already seen him that day at the hospital, comforting a crying girl named Summer and promising her a future. Earlier, a doctor told the wife her illness is not late-stage and is manageable with treatment. She holds the diagnosis as she watches her husband with Summer.

She finds Summer on a college campus and sees a young, bright girl helping an elderly janitor. Mark appears, standing between them, insisting it is not Summer's fault. In a coffee shop he admits he no longer loves his wife, that eight years turned love into family and obligation, and offers only responsibility and the rest of his time. She asks for a date to file for divorce.

Outside, at sunset, Mark sprints across the road to Summer at a bus stop, his face softening. Nausea hits the wife. She thought she had already reached rock bottom, and realizes she was wrong.
