Story

The story

Janet has always trailed one step behind her boyfriend Shawn Jacobson and her best friend Nadia Sparks. They chose the places, the studies, the careers, and she followed, ending up a nurse while the two of them became the emergency room's dream team. On a trip she paid for with her saved annual leave, Shawn ignores her camera and smiles only for Nadia's, and Janet finally turns and walks the other way.

Back at the hospital, Shawn barely notices she was gone, Nadia wins a prize for hugging him, and he leaves Janet standing in a storm while he shields Nadia with their only umbrella. At home she finds Nadia in the pajamas Shawn and she bought as a couple. Janet has already told Dr. Colton she will take the overseas training, and by morning her fever is near 104 degrees.

She has always been the one left waiting, but even she has a day when she no longer wants to follow.

He immediately struck a pose and smiled tenderly into her camera.

A young couple saw the photos on Nadia's phone and teased her, "Wow, your boyfriend must really love you.
