Story

The story

On a rooftop, a woman watches her husband's star student threaten to jump for the second time. In her previous life she lunged to save the girl, only to be pushed to her death. Now she steps back, remembering how her husband, Robert, shielded the girl from blame, married her a year later, and how her mother's grief ended in suicide.

As the crowd below chants for her to save Macy, and Robert screams that a life is on the line, she sees the girl's predatory hunger behind the tears. She walks away, asks Robert for a divorce, and is struck by her own son, Mitch, who wishes she were not his mother. Robert and Mitch rush to Macy's side, and soon bring her into the family home.

With nothing left to hold her back, she turns her back on the life she built and begins to choose herself.

Opening excerpt

Instead, I took a step back. I felt the cold wind whipping against the hem of my coat, a stark contrast to the heat of the panic below.

Down on the pavement, my husband, Robert, looked like he’d seen a ghost. His face was a mask of primal terror as he craned his neck, screaming up at me.

“Don’t you dare move back! Hannah, what are you doing? Grab her! Pull her down!”

In my previous life, at this exact heartbeat of a second, I had lunged forward.
