Story

The story

For seven years, Jess has loved Caleb Brooks, a man who hid his billions and tested her with penny-pinching cruelty — never a gift, every expense split, even condoms paid half. When her mother falls critically ill and Jess begs for a two-thousand loan, he refuses, and her mother dies. Only afterward does Jess find the gift list he kept for Nevaeh Smith next door: a private estate, designer bags, jewelry worth hundreds of millions.

A voice chat reveals the truth — Nevaeh's words convinced Caleb that any woman begging over two thousand must be a gold digger. He sends Jess a transfer of $1.88, labeled Gold Digger, and Nevaeh strolls into their apartment with her own key, urging him to end the lease and demand seven years of rent back.

Jess finally says the words: they should break up. Caleb's sly smile vanishes, and he warns her she will regret it.

Opening excerpt

To "test" me, he spent seven years never buying me a single gift, never spending a cent on me.

Even a stop at a convenience store for condoms had to be split down the middle.

Then, my mother fell critically ill. I borrowed from every friend and relative I could, but I was still two thousand short to cover the surgery fees.

No matter how much I pleaded, he refused to lend me the money.

I arranged my mother's funeral on my own.
