Story

The story

Kevin King has always been cool and disciplined, a man who keeps everyone at a distance. His marriage to Mary Lane began as a strategic alliance between their families, yet he held her close and swore she was different from everyone else. Then one evening, on the way to an auction she had dressed up for, Mary opens the passenger door and finds Bella, Kevin's new assistant, already sitting in her seat.

Mary refuses to swallow her pride. She orders Bella out of the car, but the next day the auction necklace meant for her hangs around Bella's neck, flaunted in a social media post. Mary answers by gifting Hermès necklaces to forty-six women at King Corp, every assistant except Bella, and the office gossip does the rest. When Kevin brings Bella home to explain herself, Mary faces the girl who wants her place.

A woman's intuition is rarely wrong, and Mary Lane has never watched her words for anyone.

Opening excerpt

Kevin drove over to pick me up.

He was always so cool and distant.

But today, his new secretary was sitting in the passenger seat.

Right then, I knew. This marriage was over.

The day Kevin came to get me, I opened the passenger-side door and froze.

A pretty young woman was sitting there, a sweet smile on her face. "Hi, Mrs. King!"
