Story
The story
The night before their honeymoon, Miles Henson cancels the Arctic tickets and switches the trip to Egypt, because his first love Julia Roman prefers the sun. Gabby, his wife, has spent six months in the desert photographing lizards for his research, and her burned skin can no longer bear sunlight. She quietly returns the winter clothes she just bought.
When rain traps her outside a store, Miles and Julia arrive together; Julia chatters while Miles scolds Gabby for sulking. They lock her inside the stifling car and go shopping, ignoring her messages. Half an hour later she calls the police, and Miles accuses her of losing her mind over the smashed window.
Ten years of love could not outweigh one word from Julia, the only contact Miles ever set as a favorite.
Opening excerpt
The night before our honeymoon, Miles Henson canceled the tickets to the Arctic without warning and switched our trip to Egypt.
The text notification came through while I was still in the department store picking out cold-weather gear.
Before I could even ask him about it, Miles called first, his voice carrying its usual chill.
"Julia says she likes the sun. The Arctic's too cold. It doesn't suit her."
I looked down at the winter clothes I'd just paid for and fell silent.
Julia Roman. My cousin. And Miles's first love.
