Story

The story

Rosa Finn is kidnapped and murdered, her body dismembered and scattered through the streets of Santiago. Her husband, Gregory Mason, the Commandant, leads the investigation, but he does not recognize the jade bracelet found on the corpse — the gift his own mother gave Rosa at their wedding. Instead, he assumes the dead woman is someone else and turns his suspicion on Rosa herself.

Gregory has never loved Rosa. On their wedding night he asked to marry his first love, Ellen Sean, and he has despised Rosa ever since. When his mother identifies the bracelet, he insists Rosa must have given it away to save herself, and he brings a coffin to the Finn residence to accuse her parents of hiding a criminal.

Only Rosa's ghost watches it all, unable to speak, as her husband hunts for a woman who is already dead.

Opening excerpt

I was kidnapped and murdered. Instead of seeking justice for me, my husband begged his first love to marry him and take charge of his household.

When he received the note I wrote before dying, he just frowned slightly and said, "She always takes advantage of matters of life and death to force me into things I hate."

Five days after my death, Gregory Mason, the Commandant, personally came to investigate a murder case in which the female victim's head was cut off.
