Story
The story
Cass has always given her old dog Jet everything, even booking a lavish pet resort for his birthday. But a thread on a private pet forum, where dogs seem to type as themselves, unsettles her: an anonymous poster with only five days left asks how to say goodbye without breaking his human's heart, and Cass, the only human voice there, suggests leaving a fur-ball as a keepsake.
When she gets home, Jet offers her a black fur-ball, his tail bare and raw. The poster's photo shows the same fur-ball resting in a palm marked by a cherry-red mole, and the dates and stories in his profile match Cass's own life. Then a message arrives: the poster's name is Jet, and he asks whether she is human.
Cass remembers the puppy she once saved from a man with a box cutter, the reason she chose to keep living. Now she must face the truth of who has been typing back to her.
Opening excerpt
“5 Days Left. How do I say goodbye so she won’t break?”
Below it, another line.
“Should I just vanish? Pretend I ran off and die somewhere private?”
The comment section was full of little dog avatars.
“No, seriously, don’t do that,” one replied. “Your human will spiral. Last time I accidentally slipped my leash, mine took two weeks off work to hunt for me. Don’t you dare leave her with that guilt.”
“It’s terrible, isn’t it?” another chimed in. “If only we could talk, we could ask them how they want us to go.”
I froze, hovering over the screen.
