Hired by the Father I Hate

At a job interview at a major company, Claude finds one of the interviewers is Edgar Booker, the father he has not seen in ten years. The HR manager, Jesse Dorsey, tells him Mr. Booker has arranged for him to start next week. Claude tears up the offer letter and refuses, saying he will not work with a murderer, then insists he is an orphan with no father.

Edgar keeps trying to repair their relationship, but Claude will not forgive him for how his grandmother, Trudy Vance, died. In an elevator, Edgar's wife Leah Kern urges Claude to let bygones be bygones; he refuses. At home, he places offerings before his grandmother's portrait, then keeps sending out résumés.

Another interview ends the same way: the HR manager, Francis Palmer, turns him down and points him toward Booker Group. When Edgar seizes his wrist and invokes Grandma, Claude tells him he has no right to speak of her.
