My Husband Used Surrogacy to Keep His Mistress Close

Trish's best friend Aubrey vanished for two months, then resurfaced with a photo of her pregnant belly and a caption claiming she was carrying a baby for her bestie. The hands cradling that belly wore a wedding ring matching Trish's own. Within minutes, her husband River Holland called to explain: since Trish feared childbirth, he had arranged for Aubrey to carry his child, and everyone should be grateful.

Trish remembers the dinner where River called her his princess and joked that anyone willing to bear a baby for her was welcome, and the surveillance footage of Aubrey's foot against his leg. He swore nothing was happening, and she let it go. Now Aubrey is three months pregnant, and River's friends are already joking about a second sister-in-law.

Trish ends the call, tells River she wants a divorce, and cancels the transfer that would have put her career aside for a baby. Then she runs into the two of them at the mall, arms full of baby shopping, and a fire alarm sends the crowd surging toward the exits.
