Story

The story

On the eve of her engagement to Liam, Lily's mother calls to say she cannot attend the party, waiting for her daughter to beg. Lily refuses to play along and hangs up, but the call is only the latest move in a long campaign: her mother, Carol, has opposed the match, calling Lily plain and unworthy of Liam's family, and once went behind her back to have the matchmaker, Mrs. Higgins, reject the proposal for her.

When Lily is summoned to Uncle Bob's house, she finds a full intervention waiting. Her mother weeps, Aunt Karen and the others blame her, and her sister Bella glares as the room turns on her. Lily plays a recording of her call with Mrs. Higgins, revealing that her mother and sister asked the matchmaker to pass Lily off as too insecure for Liam and to introduce Bella to him instead.

Cornered, her mother threatens to jump from the window, and Uncle Bob demands Lily kneel and apologize. Lily refuses and walks out, choosing her engagement over her family's approval.

On the eve of my engagement to my boyfriend, my mom suddenly called me.

"I have something to do on the day of your engagement party. I probably can't make it."

After she spoke, she waited for my reply. I was silent for a moment.

"That's fine. You're not needed for the wedding either. I'm the main character; that's enough."

I knew she wanted me to panic. She wanted me to beg her.

What parent wouldn't show up for their child's biggest life event?

But I didn't want to play her game. I hung up the phone decisively.
