Everyone in Weston Montgomery's circle knows Harper as his devoted, obedient girlfriend — a woman mocked for enduring his mistress and his cruelty just to marry into wealth. Yet when Weston proposes at a family dinner, Harper refuses, saying she has done everything she could and there is no need for a wedding. She walks out into the rain, dismissed by his chauffeur and bodyguards, and is met by Stella Harrington, who mocks her.

Harper reveals she knows Stella was the one who once assaulted Weston, causing his breakdown, and the two women fight. Weston strikes Harper from behind with a brick, leaving her bleeding, and Stella kicks her as she loses consciousness. She wakes in a hospital, where Mrs. Montgomery tells her she is free to leave, and Harper says she will go to Australia to study in seven days.

As she lies there, Harper recalls how three years ago Weston's parents looked down on her, a girl from a rural town with only a dying grandfather, and how her grandfather begged them and donated his body to their medical research hospital.
