Story

The story

For eight years, Ava has stood beside Liam Foster, the man who once promised to protect her. But when his childhood friend Dolores loses her hair to chemotherapy, Liam demands Ava give up her own. When she refuses, his friends pin her down and he shaves her head himself, while Dolores laughs from her wheelchair and calls her a plucked frog. The expensive hair products he gave her days before were never a gift — only preparation for a wig.

Ava ends the relationship on the spot, but Liam will not let her go quietly. He insists she is being dramatic, that Dolores is like a sister, that no one else will want her now. When Dolores fakes a collapse, he shoves Ava to the floor and threatens her, then carries Dolores away, leaving Ava to gather her severed hair from a trash can.

She packs her suitcase and walks out, determined to leave Liam Foster behind for good.

Opening excerpt

My boyfriend, Liam, shaved my head for his childhood friend. Dolores was losing her hair to chemotherapy, so he demanded I give her mine.

“Dolores’s allergic to the synthetic ones on the market,” he’d said, his voice flat. “You’ve been growing your hair for a decade. It’s perfect for a wig.”
