Story

The story

Abandoned on a mountaintop by his wife Whitney Novak so she can tend to his younger brother Aaron Novak, August Novak is kidnapped on his way home and endures three days and nights of torture. The one call he manages to make for help is hung up on. When he finally drags himself home, battered and wounded, his family is celebrating Aaron's latest achievement, and he is met with contempt rather than concern.

Whitney dismisses his kidnapping as a convenient lie, while his mother Maddison Novak blames him for ruining Aaron's celebration and wishes he had died instead. Trapped in a marriage he cannot leave, August asks for a divorce, but Whitney refuses, declaring there will only ever be a widow, never a divorce. All he wants now is to stay alive.

Opening excerpt

When my wife, Whitney Novak, abandoned me on the mountaintop once again to rush off and take care of my younger brother, Aaron Novak, I was kidnapped on my way home.

For three days and three nights, I endured unimaginable torture.

The one call I managed to make for help was coldly hung up on.

The day I finally dragged myself home, battered and covered in wounds, my family was celebrating Aaron's latest achievement.

Whitney frowned in irritation.
