Story

The story

Maeve's mother died giving birth to her brother Gavin, and their father has treated Maeve ever since as a curse born to ruin those near her. Whenever Gavin misbehaves, the punishment lands on Maeve: jalapeños forced down her throat, her art portfolio torn to shreds, and finally her college acceptance letter burned in the hearth while Gavin watches, sobbing.

When Gavin steals money to tip a webcam girl, their father films the letter burning for his parenting channel and orders Maeve to work at Lyle Briggs's fish processing plant, her wages going straight into his account. Then he announces that Lyle Briggs himself is coming to dinner, and Maeve understands that the plant and the dinner were never meant to be separate things.

She has saved fourteen hundred dollars her father knows nothing about. She has stopped shielding Gavin. Whatever comes next, she intends to watch it with her eyes wide open.

Opening excerpt

My mother died of a hemorrhage when she gave birth to my younger brother. My father always said I was a curse, born with a dark fate that brought ruin to everyone close to me. And so, I became his favorite tool for keeping my brother in line.

When my brother was little, he refused to eat bitter vegetables.

My father didn't force-feed him. Instead, he pried my jaw open and shoved a handful of raw, fiery jalapeños down my throat. I thrashed on the kitchen floor, my throat burning and bleeding, while my brother screamed in terror and choked down his greens, crying hysterically.
