Story
The story
For ten years of marriage, a wife kept a silent ledger. Before their wedding, her husband Winston Farley bought one hundred urns and promised that each proof of his infidelity would fill one; when the last was used, the marriage would be dead and she would leave with nothing. He forgot the vow. She never reminded him, quietly slipping private investigators' photographs into urn after urn while he courted a famous livestreamer and a principal ballerina.
On their tenth anniversary he broke his promise to attend her prenatal appointment to celebrate the birthday of April Cooley, the student he sponsors. She canceled the appointment, chose an abortion, and opened the hundredth urn. Inside lay a signed divorce agreement and a notarized forfeiture leaving Winston with nothing, beside a note from the young man he once was.
He signed without hesitation, planning to marry April, and told her to move out of the house she had bought. She packed, changed the locks, and left for East Africa, Hokkaido, New Zealand, and finally Norway, where the aurora burned alone above her.
Opening excerpt
I never divorced him, because before the wedding he'd bought 100 urns.
“You've always loved your rituals. If I'm ever unfaithful after we're married, you put the proof inside an urn.”
“Once all hundred are used up, our marriage is officially dead, and I leave with nothing.”
“This is my promise to grow old with you. I'm betting not a single one will ever be opened.”
He seemed to forget about them after that.
I never reminded him.
