Story

The story

Nora Webb has always been relentlessly cheerful, so billionaire Wyatt Landry pays her a fortune simply to stay happy inside his estate. Wyatt suffers from severe, treatment-resistant depression, and their emotions have become linked: her joy keeps him alive, while a single tear can push him toward death.

When Wyatt leaves on an overseas business trip, Isabel Caldwell, who considers herself his rightful fiancée, storms into Nora's closet with bodyguards, smashing her belongings and demanding she leave. As Nora's distress spreads, Wyatt's heart rate plunges overseas, and his chief of staff Franklin drops to his knees begging Isabel to let Nora smile again. Isabel has Franklin's leg broken and locks them both in a dark basement storage room, where Nora must fight her own terror to keep Wyatt alive.

Opening excerpt

That was until Wyatt Landry, a billionaire worth hundreds of billions, signed me to live in his sprawling estate. My daily allowance was one hundred thousand dollars. My sole KPI? Just stay happy.

You see, Wyatt suffered from severe, treatment-resistant clinical depression. He lived perpetually on the edge of a precipice, always one bad day away from the roof.

But somehow, our emotions became linked.

As long as I was giggling, he felt the world was worth living in. The moment my mouth curved downward, he was looking for a rope.
