Story
The story
For seven years, Dan has watched his wife Leona usher his father out the door before sunset on the one day a year the old man takes the train to Boston to see him. This year is no different: Leona flicks his slippers across the floor, and Frank, who has occupied the guest room for three months, sprays the air with Lysol and calls the house filthy. Humiliated, Dan's father hurries away, and Dan runs after him.
Leona does not notice Dan is gone for two hours; when she calls, it is only to send him for Frank's roasted nuts. She refuses to pay seventy dollars for his father's train ticket, calling it marital property, yet waves off the hundred and seventy-eight dollars Dan has spent on Frank's errands. When a thunderstorm triggers his father's old terror of floods and the man collapses at the transit station, Dan begs Leona for a ride to the hospital. The living room is empty, and Frank tells him to handle it himself.
Dan brings his father home from the hospital to find Leona, Corey and Frank laughing together. Leona frowns: why is his dad back?
Opening excerpt
We had been married for seven years, and every single year, my father made this trip. And every single year, he was ushered out the door before sunset.
I wanted to ask him to stay the night, to tell him I’d already made up the guest bed. But before I could even open my mouth, Leona added, "He can keep those slippers if he wants."
