Story

The story

An eighteen-year-old girl on death row chooses immediate execution without hesitation, and the hospice counselor who once taught her cannot let her story end in silence. On a legal true-crime series, Dr. Elias Stern shows the girl's meager belongings—a solitary butterfly hair clip atop a bloodstained prison uniform—and begs her family to contact him.

Her three older brothers, Carter, Rhys, and Dean Westlake, watch with cold disdain. They believe Sienna Westlake is colluding with the counselor to win sympathy and come home. They deny her visits, certain she will admit her mistake before the execution date. But Sienna cannot go back, and she never wants to.

Once the adopted daughter of the Westlake family, Sienna gave up her room, her kidney, and her place when the true daughter, Phoebe, returned. Now the brothers dote on Phoebe while Sienna's plea for leniency sits drafted, waiting for an apology she will not give.

Opening excerpt

At the end of the segment, the reporter asked him if there was ever a prisoner he couldn’t reach.

“I’ve met many who hold onto hope for an appeal, or who deeply regret their choices and wish for a different next life,” he said, his voice measured. “But there was only one inmate who chose immediate execution without hesitation.”

“She was an eighteen-year-old girl, and she was once my student. She only said one thing to me.”
