Story
The story
Zoe Miller's mother has always dismissed her achievements as pure luck, even after she earned a place at Kingston University. On her first day, her mother hands her a book of scratch-off tickets and blocks her number, declaring that luck alone will cover her living expenses.
Starving and malnourished, Zoe survives by eating her roommate's discarded food while her mother's flyers keep every campus shop from hiring her. Her advisor warns that her failing grades could mean expulsion, and her roommate Dana mistakes her desperation for a gambling addiction.
With one final ticket left, Zoe faces a choice: cash in her winnings, or risk everything on one more scratch.
Opening excerpt
My mother always said my whole life was built on sheer luck.
When I got first place on an exam, she’d say, “You’re a good guesser.”
When I won a gold medal, it was, “The judges must have been blind.”
When I was accepted into Kingston University, she told everyone we knew, “The girl has no real talent. She’s just lucky!”
So, on my first day of school, she handed me a book of scratch-off tickets.
