Story

The story

Sienna has never spoken a word in over twenty years. Born with a cursed tongue, she learned that whatever she says comes true, so she chose silence. Her husband, Connor Grant, has long treated her with contempt, and when her six-year-old son Jamie accidentally knocks over her pregnant sister-in-law Camille Lane, Connor sends the terrified boy to a kennel as punishment.

By the time Sienna finds Jamie, he is in a cage with five vicious dogs, and almost nothing of him remains. Holding what is left of her son, she opens her mouth for the first time and speaks a vow of blood against Connor and his house. Connor refuses to believe the body is Jamie, calls it filth, and has it thrown to dogs. When Camille's own child is lost, Connor blames Sienna and tries to force her mute forever.

Eleanor Grant stops him and reveals an old reading: if Connor married a mute woman whose birth chart matched his, the family's fortune would be preserved, but the moment she speaks, the family will fall apart.

Opening excerpt

My son had been bitten by a dog before. He was terrified of them. I begged. I went down on my knees and slammed my forehead against the floor until it was bleeding.
