Story
The story
Isabel is the only daughter of an immensely wealthy man, gentle and eager to please. When her father collapses at breakfast and dies of a sudden heart attack, her stepmother Meredith, her half-brother Brody and her fiancé Simon Graham drop their masks within the hour. Outside the emergency room they demand the company keys, the corporate seal and the vault codes, and Simon offers to keep their engagement as an act of charity if she signs everything away.
As Isabel kneels on the hospital floor, luminous floating text appears before her eyes, warning her not to surrender the seal and revealing that her father staged his collapse with a drug to test their loyalty. Following the words, she hides the keys, plays the broken orphan and rides the bus home, where she finds the mansion ransacked, Brody hammering at the wall safe and Meredith packing up the paintings.
A spy pen in her pocket, Isabel lets them plunder and boast, while the text urges her to record every theft and stall them until her father's legal team arrives.
Opening excerpt
When my father died of a sudden heart attack, my world fractured.
As I knelt weeping outside the ER doors, my stepmother, my half-brother, and my fiancé immediately shed their disguises. They wanted me gone. They wanted the company keys. They wanted me stripped of everything.
I was on the verge of giving in, too weak to fight back, when I saw the words. Luminous, floating text scrolled across my vision like a live-stream feed.
