No Return to the Harbor Anymore

In her last life, Sophie was blamed for the death of her sister Luna, who took a knife meant for her. Derek, the boy she loved, hated her for it. Her parents turned away, and she was locked in a dark attic for years. On her twenty-second birthday, broken in body and spirit, she slit her wrists. Derek's last words were a warning: in her next life, do not love him, and never come between him and Luna again.

Sophie wakes back in her senior year classroom. Derek tosses her his jacket and tells her to hold it because Luna is coming to watch the game. This time she does not greet him with joy. She keeps her distance, terrified of the boy she once chased. But before the school day ends, her mother calls her to the hospital. Luna needs a blood transfusion, and Sophie is once again her on-demand blood bag.

Derek hands her a gift box as she is pushed toward the treatment room. Luna, pale in the next bed, smiles and says Derek really does care about Sophie, because he left the game early when she did not come.
